Twenty years of marriage, raising four beautiful children together, had made me believe our relationship was unbreakable, built on trust and mutual respect. Determined to bridge the gap growing between us, I decided to surprise him at work. I packed his favorite meal, excited to share a moment of love and support during what I assumed were stressful times. However, my arrival at his office brought an entirely different reality crashing down.
His coworkers looked at me with confusion, one finally admitting the truth: “He was laid off three months ago. We haven’t seen him since.”
The words hit me like a freight train. My world, once steady and secure, now felt like it was crumbling beneath my feet.

The next morning, I watched him go through his usual routine—shaving, dressing in his work clothes, sipping his coffee, all while preparing for an imaginary day at an office he no longer belonged to. As I stood by the kitchen counter, I decided to approach the subject indirectly.
“How’s work going?” I asked lightly, masking my turmoil. “Didn’t you mention a promotion?”
He barely hesitated. “Oh, the promotion’s still a bit down the line,” he replied nonchalantly, kissing me goodbye before leaving.
